The local commitee of Xanthi was founded in 2010 from students in the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Democritus University of Thrace. Back then our observer was counting only two members. It was with their persistence and efforts, that on the beginnings of 2013 a massive growth of registrations has occurred and now LC Xanthi counts about 35 active members and more than 150 registered members! In the meanwhile, Mr. Georgios Kiriakou, Professor of the Telecommunication and Space Department, took on the responsibility of being in charge of our local commitee.
Our members are students and our local committee is from and for students! With the possibilities that offer a big team, in November 2013, our first international workshop took place, with 10 participants from all over Europe, that had excellent feedbacks! Now, our local committee continues being active with many events and workshops in local level, but also in international level! In 4 May 2014, our local committee was promoted in LC, as a result of our hard work!
With the possibilities that offer a big team, we organized our first local training in May of 2013 with trainers from LC Athens training team, that gave us directions about how to organize our very own first event! We started immediately working on creating our first workshop, Rock the Bit, with much energy and with the will to organize for you an amazing event! After all these years and many participations in different events all across Europe, we have learnt from the best LCs how an event should be and we are ready to apply this knowledge to our participants as a thank you for your support and patience! The Eestec Spirit is powerful among us and we guarantee that our first, and certainly not last, event will be an event worth to remember!
The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is part of the Democritus University of Thrace, which is composed of 18 departments throughout Thrace (Xanthi, Komotini, Alexandroupolis, Orestiada). The department was originally founded in 1975 in Xanthi as department of Electrical Engineering and it was the second department of the Polytechnic School of University. It was later renamed to department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to embody the emerging needs due to the progress in computer systems. Today, the department’ personnel is composed of over 45 faculty members and a large number of research and administrative staff.
The department consists of five sectors, the Electrical Energy Systems, the Electronics and Information Technology Systems, the Telecommunications and Space, the Software and Application Development and the Physics and Applied Mathematics. The department facilities originally resided in the city of Xanthi. However, since 2008 they have moved to the Kimmeria campus, close to students’ dormitories. The high level of education that offers and the many possibilities in the academical progress, classify it as one of the first choices for the future students of Greece.
Xanthi, the capital of the homonymous prefecture Xanthi, is placed in the region of Thrace in northern Greece, the crossroad of Black Sea, Aegean Sea, Europe and Asia. This is where the waters of the river Kosinthos are discharged into the plain, after a journey of many kilometers from the mountains of Rhodope, framed by the three monasteries of Panayia Kalamous, Panayia Archangeliotissa and the Taxiarches, as well as the ruins of the Byzantine city of Xantheia. With approximately 65000 inhabitants, Xanthi is the commercial and spiritual center of the region and one of its characteristics is its multicultural aspect as well as the harmonically co‐existence of both the Christians and the Muslims.
The cultural life of the town is very intense. The Thracian Folk Festival Xanthian Carnival, known all over the world, the Old Town Festival, unique in its kind and popular for its multiform and Manos Chatzidakis Festival are insurmountable institutions that give the characteristic of the cultural orgasm at our town. Split in the Old Town, a magical and peaceful place decorated in a Doric order, and the contemporary city, Xanthi worthily is characterized as “the city with thousands colors…” and a town with two faces, the old and the modern, each one with its own unique characteristics.
